Mock Trial Team among 48 Best in Nation, Advances in National Tournament

The Eastern Kentucky University mock trial team can officially consider itself one of the top 48 teams in the nation, or among the top 15 percent.

Winning ballots against Princeton University, Washington and Lee University and Wake Forest University in the opening round of the national championship tournament at Furman University March 23-25, the EKU team received a bid to compete in the final rounds of the championship in Minneapolis April 13-15.

Only 48 teams nationwide will compete in the championship event, out of 650 teams that began the season.

The other schools qualifying from the Greenville tournament were Harvard University, Princeton, Duke University and Furman. The Eastern squad also finished ahead of teams from the University of North Carolina, University of South Carolina, University of Alabama, Elon University, Patrick Henry College and Emory University.

Caleb Taylor, a political science major from Union, was one of 10 students (of 144 possible awardees) honored as an Outstanding Attorney. This is his first year on the team.

Other members of the qualifying EKU team are: Zac Caldwell, Elizabethtown; Alexandra Sipes, Mt. Sterling; Katelyn Conner, Erlanger; Chloe Richardson, Orient, Ohio; Anthony Sean Potter, Whitesburg; Josh Lang, Fort Thomas; and Ryan Black, Louisville.

Coaches for the team are Sara Zeigler, Tom Parker, Lawrence Hilton and Lynnette Noblitt.

Also at the event, Caldwell was chosen (by lot) to attend a luncheon at which retired Supreme Court Judge Sandra Day O’Connor spoke.

“The program thanks University Programs, the College of Justice and Safety, the Department of Government, and Distinguished Alumnus Bob Sanders for their financial support,” Zeigler said.
